HeartWare is developing a family of implantable circulatory assist devices or "heart pumps", aimed at treating patients with advanced heart failure. Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death in the developed world, affecting over 10 million people. HeartWare's lead product, the HVAD, is the smallest full-output "third generation" circulatory assist device in development. Human implants are currently being conducted under a combined European and Australian twenty-patient clinical trial. Participating centres include the Vienna General Hospital (Austria), the Royal Perth Hospital (Australia), Harefield Hospital (UK) and Hanover Medical Centre (Germany).
