The Sioux City Police Department holds accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Accreditation is awarded by the Commission only to law enforcement agencies that demonstrate the highest commitment to professionalism both in policy and in practice. Only 3% of all agencies throughout the United States are accredited by CALEA, and only 7 of the 499 Iowa law enforcement agencies have earned that status. Earning it requires a rigorous annual self assessment of over 400 standard practices as well as a periodic assessment by a delegation from the Commission. The Sioux City Police Department's voluntary participation in this process reflects a commitment to professionally-recognized criteria for excellence in law enforcement management and service delivery.
